Ceramic Crowns and All Porcelain Crowns

Ceramic crowns or all porcelain dental crowns (”caps”) are different names for the same type of crown (”cap”).

In the past, dentists used the old metal fused to porcelain crowns. They had a metal inside with tooth colored porcelain added on top of it. These crowns were and still are very strong — the problem is that these crowns are opaque, and do not reflect light as do natural teeth.

New technology has allowed us to make ceramic crowns that are just as strong – if not stronger – as the older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns – and are also more esthetic!
