Dr. Niels Oestervemb, DDS, MsC, ABGD FAGD

I am Dr. Niels Oestervemb, and my goal is to be the best dentist in Winchester VA for you and your entire family!

EDUCATION: RANKED NUMBER ONE IN MY GRADUATING CLASS

I graduated as valedictorian (number 1 in my class) from the Royal Dental College, earning my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. During my time in dental school I was also granted a 1-year full time scholarship for clinical research, and was subsequently awarded my Master’s degree with an emphasis on Esthetic Dentistry.

DEDICATED TO HIGHER EDUCATION - RESIDENCY AND FELLOWSHIP TRAINED

After graduating dental school I finished a General Practice Residency followed by a Fellowship in Advanced General Dentistry at the College of Dentistry (University of Iowa), and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. My Residency and Fellowship was focused on advanced procedures including Oral Surgery, Dental Implants, Full Mouth Rehabilitation's and IV-sedation. Following my Residency and Fellowship, i stayed on for 4 years as a full time faculty member at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics  and the College of Dentistry.  I both taught people in their residency program as well as  4th year dental students helping determine who was ready to graduate. But most importantly, while in Iowa, I also met the love of my life and wife, Dr. Amber DeWeerd.

The only Dentist in Winchester VA to be Certified by the American Board of General Dentistry in a 50-mile radius.

My years at the College of Dentistry have allowed me to learn from some of the best specialists in the country. I put my knowledge to the test in 2015 when I became certified by the American Board of General Dentistry (ABGD) and completed a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. The American Board of General Dentistry certifies only 0.5% of dentists. Click here to read more about what it means to be certified by the American Board of General Dentistry.

In order to become ABGD board certified you must:

  • Have 2 years of residency training after dental school in general dentistry or a 1-year residency and 600 hours of continuing education.
  • Complete a 6-hour long multiple-choice test with topics covering all aspect of dentistry. If you pass the test, you become eligible to move on to the second step the following year.
  • Master a 4-hour oral examination covering all the different dental disciplines and topics.
  • Execute a 4-hour written test to treatment plan a complex patient and justify your treatment. If you pass all of these tests the American Board of General Dentistry then finally certifies you.

Dedicated teacher

I still continue to teach other dentist the newest advancements in implant and digital dentistry. I am a faculty member for the American Academy of Implant Dentistry's (AAID) Mid Atlantic Implant Maxi Course. Participants here get over 300 hours of continuing education spending 1 weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) each month for 10 months learning how to place implants. I teach the participants how i have incorporated digital technology into implant surgery both for placement and restoring dental implants, making the participants implant surgeries faster, more predictable and less painful.

ACCOMPLISHED AUTHOR IN THE FIELD OF DENTISTRY

I truly love dentistry as both a science and an art form. A large portion of my spare time is devoted to both keeping up with the most recent research and writing dental articles about new dental procedures. As a result, my work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. I also co-authored a chapter in a dental textbook on tooth colored fillings (composites). I also am a reviewer for the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry deciding if articles are suitable for publication or not.

PERSONAL ENJOYMENT

I very much enjoy spending time outdoors, cooking for friends and family, and traveling to new places together with Dr. Amber DeWeerd. I am also very excited to be a part of the wonderful community that Winchester has to offer. You will likely see Dr. Amber and I, walking around town with our daughter, Nina, and our fur baby, Basser, the Golden Retriever.

At Smiles of Virginia Dental Center, I offer a full range of general dentistry services. However, my primary focus is on implants from start to finish, oral surgery including wisdom teeth, full mouth rehabilitation, orthodontics and IV-sedation. Most of my patients needing general dentistry like fillings or crowns often will see my wife Dr. Amber for this.

If you are looking for a dentist in Winchester Virginia, I’d love for you to give me and my team a try!
